How to become a member

The Branch welcomes applications from members of all professions, who, while not necessarily aspiring to Fellowship or practising as an arbitrator, have become involved with commercial dispute resolution as part of their primary professional role.

Membership of the Irish Branch of the Institute provides a greater understanding of the procedures and practices of dispute resolution.

There are three grades of membership.

  • Associate Member (ACIArb) - indicates that holders have a basic understanding of dispute resolution gained through either academic study or practical experience
  • Member (MCIArb) - those with a good level of knowledge of arbitration or adjudication and their respective local law gained through either academic study or experience
mediation professionals who have either completed a recognised mediation accreditation programme or have demonstrated their mediation skills though practical application.
  • Fellow (FCIArb/Chartered Arbitrator) - denotes individuals who have completed an advanced academic programme of study or who have demonstrated an equivalent level of knowledge through their professional experience of arbitration or mediation.

The Institute provides education and training to help you attain all these levels. The courses are taught by experienced arbitrators and academics. Entry is through the Associate grade.

For those with little or no knowledge of dispute resolution it is necessary to complete an entry course for Associate Membership. Practising lawyers and those with law degrees may become members of the Institute by attending and passing the appropriate assessment. Exemption from examination is granted to holders of the Diploma in Arbitration from University College Dublin. Suitably experienced lawyers may qualify for Fellowship by completing the Special Fellowship Assessment.

The Irish Branch offers Associate Membership (ACIArb) in Mediation Award following a one day course.
